The short version
No ads. No selling your data. No tracking or analytics cookies. Calls are never recorded. You can delete your account at any time.
What we collect
When you make an account
- Your username and display name.
- Your password, stored only as a scrambled hash. We never see or keep your actual password.
- Your birthday, so we can check you are 13 or older.
If you log in with Discord
Your Discord user ID, username and display name, and your Discord avatar. We do not get your Discord email, password, friends list or messages.
What you post
Messages, images, files, voice messages, reactions, poll votes, profile details (like your bio, pronouns, avatar, banner and status), servers you make or join, and friends you add.
Technical information
- A login token kept in your browser so you stay signed in. Sessions expire after 60 days.
- The type of device and browser you use (for example "Chrome on Mac"), so you and our safety team can see where an account is signed in.
- Your IP address, which we use briefly to stop spam and abuse (like too many sign-ups at once). Our hosting providers may keep it in short-term security logs.
- If you turn on notifications, a push subscription from your browser so we can send them.
What we do not collect
- We do not record voice or video calls. Calls connect people directly, browser to browser.
- We do not use advertising, tracking pixels or analytics cookies.
- We do not read your private messages, except as described under "Who can see your stuff".
How we use it
- To run Gabble: delivering messages, showing profiles, connecting calls and sending notifications.
- To keep people safe: checking ages, stopping spam and scams, and reviewing reports.
- To fix bugs and keep Gabble working.
- We do not use your data to build ad profiles, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
Who can see your stuff
- Your profile (username, display name, avatar, banner, bio, badges and status) can be seen by other people on Gabble.
- Server messages can be seen by everyone who can view that channel. Server owners and moderators can manage messages in their servers.
- Direct messages and group chats can be seen by the people in them.
- Our safety team (Gabble admins) can see messages that someone reports to us, including the reported DM and a few messages around it, so we can understand what happened. Admins can also review messages in servers when moderating. Admins cannot browse your DMs unless they are reported.
- The law: we may share information if we are legally required to, or if it is needed to protect someone from serious harm.
Services we use
Gabble relies on a few other companies to work. They only get what they need to do their job:
- Cloudflare runs our servers, database and file storage, and handles our domain.
- Vercel hosts the Gabble website.
- Google Fonts serves the fonts Gabble uses, so Google can see your IP address when fonts load.
- Discord, only if you choose to log in with Discord.
- Cloudflare and Google STUN servers help voice and video calls connect. During a call, the people you call can see your IP address, which is how direct calls work.
- Link previews: when you post a link, our server visits it to make a preview, so that website sees a visit from Gabble, not from you.
Cookies and browser storage
Gabble does not use tracking cookies. We store a few things in your browser's local storage: your login token, your theme and layout settings, and small things like whether you closed an announcement. Clearing your browser data signs you out.
How long we keep things
- Messages and files stay until you or a moderator delete them.
- Login sessions expire after 60 days, or when you log out.
- Reports and moderation records are kept as long as needed to keep Gabble safe.
- When you delete your account, we remove your profile, password, Discord link, sessions, server memberships, friends and push subscriptions right away. Messages you sent in servers and DMs stay, but show as "Deleted User". If you want your messages gone too, delete them before deleting your account, or ask us.
Your choices and rights
- Edit your profile any time in User Settings.
- Control who can DM you, block people, and mute servers and channels.
- Delete your account in User Settings → My Account.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it. Message us in the official Gabble HQ server (everyone is in it), or use Report on any message, profile or server.
Depending on where you live, you may have extra rights under laws like the GDPR, and the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Gabble is for people aged 13 and older. We ask for your birthday at sign-up and block anyone under 13. If we learn that someone under 13 has an account, we delete it. If you think a child under 13 is using Gabble, please report their account.
Security
Connections to Gabble are encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed, never stored as plain text. No service is perfectly secure, so use a strong password you do not use anywhere else.
Where your data is stored
Our providers run servers in many countries, so your information may be stored or processed outside the country where you live.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in an important way, we will tell you on Gabble before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
